Getting it on together

You know your dog best so before you buy, ask yourself...

Will he trust me to try something new?

Do I have the patience needed to build trust?

Have I planned to make his Heat Hugger a natural and comfortable part of his life?

If the answer is yes to all these questions and you now have a Heat Hugger:

  • Introduce your dog to his Heat Hugger with gentle play and praise. Take your time getting him used to putting his face into the suit.

  • Undo the Velco neck fastening.

  • Sit beside with one arm over his back or stand with him between your legs. Support your dog by hugging him close and praising. Open the suit and slip over his head like putting on a tank top.

  • Now reach through the neck opening and pull one front leg through at a time bending the leg towards the chest. Praise and quickly pull the other leg through.

  • Once the body of the suit is on pull the neck opening over the head and attach Velcro. Good dog.

  • Take your dog on an adventure right away so he associates his Heat Hugger with fun.

  • To remove, unfasten and pull the neck over the head then slip the coat off over the back legs.

  • Increase periods of wear gradually up to a maximum of 4 hours and ease fit regularly by pulling the suit away from the body. Heat Huggers, like new shoes, will soften and shape to fit your dog overtime so help your Heat Hugger and your dog to get used to each other slowly.

  • Check regularly for signs that your dog is becoming too warm – panting, increased salivation, dry gums – remove the suit and offer water and a cool place to relax. Seek the help of a vet if he appears uncomfortable or distressed.

  • Wash your Heat Hugger in warm soapy water. Do not use detergent. Rinse well and dry away from heat. Store dry and flat and away from direct sunlight.
